Best Use of the $300 Amex Platinum Hotel Credit: Cosmopolitan Las Vegas (Part 3)
The Amex Platinum hotel credit can be one of the most valuable benefits of the Platinum Card, but only if you use it strategically. I recently used mine for a one-night stay at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, and it turned out to be one of my favorite Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts redemptions yet.
I originally booked a Terrace Studio for just $159.20 before taxes and fees. After my Amex Platinum hotel credit was applied, the prepaid portion of my room was completely covered. On top of that, my Fine Hotels + Resorts reservation included a $100 food and beverage credit, $60 toward breakfast, guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout and a complimentary room upgrade when available.
The upgrade ended up being the highlight of the stay. My Terrace Studio was upgraded to a massive Wraparound Terrace Suite, which completely changed the experience. Here’s exactly how I booked it, what was included and why I think The Cosmopolitan can be one of the best uses of the Amex Platinum hotel credit if you’re planning a trip to Las Vegas.

How the Amex Platinum Hotel Credit Works
Before getting into my stay, it helps to understand how the Amex Platinum hotel credit currently works. Eligible U.S. Consumer Platinum Card Members can receive up to $600 in hotel statement credits per calendar year on qualifying prepaid hotel bookings through American Express Travel.
The benefit is divided into two periods: up to $300 from January through June and another $300 from July through December. To qualify, the reservation must be an eligible prepaid booking at a participating Fine Hotels + Resorts property or The Hotel Collection property and paid with an eligible Platinum Card.
One important distinction is that The Hotel Collection generally requires a minimum stay of two consecutive nights, while Fine Hotels + Resorts does not require a two-night minimum. That makes FHR particularly useful for shorter luxury stays, which is exactly how I used the benefit in Las Vegas.

Why Las Vegas Is a Great Place to Use the Amex Platinum Hotel Credit
My strategy for maximizing the Amex Platinum hotel credit is a little different from simply using $300 toward the most expensive hotel possible. I don’t necessarily want to turn a $900 hotel room into a $600 hotel room.
Instead, I look for luxury properties where the prepaid room rate is close to (or ideally below) my available $300 credit. If I can find a great hotel around $200 or $250 per night, the credit can potentially cover most or all of the prepaid stay while I still receive the additional Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits.
Las Vegas is especially good for this strategy because hotel pricing fluctuates dramatically. A luxury property that costs $500 or $600 per night during a busy weekend might drop to less than $200 on a slower weekday. That is when the numbers start to get interesting. When I searched American Express Travel for my dates, I found a surprisingly low rate at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.
My Amex FHR Booking at The Cosmopolitan Las Vegas
The least expensive room available during my stay was a City Room for $151.20 before taxes and fees. Before automatically choosing the cheapest option, however, I checked the other room categories and noticed that a Terrace Studio was only $159.20 before taxes and fees.
For roughly $8 more, I could book a 620-square-foot room with a king bed and one of the private balconies The Cosmopolitan is known for. That was an easy upgrade to justify, so I booked the Terrace Studio.

My reservation came out to approximately:
- Terrace Studio: $159.20 before taxes and fees
- Prepaid through American Express Travel: $180.50
- Amount due at the hotel: approximately $62
- Amex Platinum hotel credit applied: $180.50
If you’re a little confused of the what the Amex Platinum Hotel Credit covers, you always want to take the total points to
Because the entire $180.50 prepaid portion qualified for my available Amex Platinum hotel credit, that portion of the stay was effectively covered. I also hadn’t used the full $300 semiannual benefit, which meant I still had approximately $119.50 remaining for another eligible hotel reservation during the same six-month period.
I still had charges due directly at the hotel, including resort-related fees, so I would not describe the entire stay as literally free. The value became much more impressive once the Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits were added.
What Fine Hotels + Resorts Benefits Did I Receive at The Cosmopolitan?
Booking through Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts did much more than simply trigger the hotel credit. My reservation also came with several additional benefits that added significant value to a one-night stay.
For my particular reservation at The Cosmopolitan, the benefits included:
- $100 food and beverage credit
- $60 daily breakfast credit for two
- Room upgrade upon arrival, when available
- Guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout
- Noon check-in, when available
- Complimentary Wi-Fi
These benefits can change, so I always recommend reviewing the Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits shown for your specific dates and checking the welcome letter provided by the hotel at check-in. This was the letter provided to me at check-in.
The $100 Food and Beverage Credit
One of the benefits I found easiest to use was the $100 food and beverage credit. I personally value dining credits because they replace something I would already be spending money on rather than encouraging me to purchase an experience I might otherwise skip. During this stay, I used all of my $100 credit toward room service. Having dinner delivered to a suite in Las Vegas already feels indulgent, but having a $100 property credit available to offset the cost made the experience much more worthwhile.
A good thing to note about The Cosmopolitan is that it’s now a part of the MGM Resorts. This is a huge because you can actually take your dining credits and go use them at a different MGM properties. For example, say you want to eat at Carbone Riviera. You can go to the Bellagio, have dinner at Carbone Riviera, and just charge the bill back to your room at The Cosmopolitan. Crazy, right?!

The $60 Breakfast Credit
My Fine Hotels + Resorts reservation also included a $60 daily breakfast credit for two at select restaurants. I used mine for breakfast at Overlook Grill, which gave me a proper sit-down breakfast without needing to leave the pool area.
Between the $100 food and beverage credit and the $60 breakfast credit, I had up to $160 in dining benefits during a one-night stay. Considering that my prepaid hotel charge was $180.50 and was covered by the hotel credit, the dining benefits alone made the value of the reservation stand out. And that was before factoring in the room upgrade.

My Amex FHR Room Upgrade at The Cosmopolitan
Fine Hotels + Resorts includes a room upgrade upon arrival when available, but this is a benefit I never count on when deciding whether to make a reservation. I always recommend booking a room you would be happy staying in even if no upgrade becomes available. In my case, I booked the Terrace Studio and would have been perfectly happy with it. At check-in, however, I found out that I had been upgraded to a Wraparound Terrace Suite.
The upgrade was substantial. Instead of my already spacious Terrace Studio, I had a huge suite with separate living areas, a large bathroom and one of The Cosmopolitan’s signature wraparound terraces overlooking Las Vegas.
Because upgrades are based on availability, I would never assign a guaranteed dollar value to this benefit. Still, when an upgrade like this does happen, it can dramatically increase the overall value of an FHR stay.
Amex FHR Noon Check-in and 4:00 P.M. Checkout
The guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout is one of the most useful Fine Hotels + Resorts perks, especially on a one-night stay. It may not sound as exciting as a suite upgrade, but it can make a major difference in how much time you actually get to enjoy the hotel. A standard 11 a.m. checkout usually means waking up, getting breakfast and immediately thinking about packing. With a 4 p.m. checkout, you essentially gain another half-day at the property.
In Las Vegas, that could mean sleeping in, having breakfast, spending a few hours at the pool, returning to the room to shower and then getting ready before finally checking out. If you are only staying for one night, those extra hours can make the stay feel significantly longer. Fine Hotels + Resorts also offers noon check-in when available, so if you happen to receive both early check-in and late checkout, you can potentially stretch a one-night reservation into a much fuller hotel experience.
Unfortunately, they were not able to accommodate my noon check-in. I got there around 1:30 p.m. and they said they would text me once my room was ready. That was fine because that gave me a chance to get my favorite pizza (white pizza) at Secret Pizza. The text came right around 3:00 p.m. so around the usual check-in time.

How Much Value Did I Get From My Amex Platinum Hotel Credit?
The easiest way to understand the value of this stay is to look at the numbers.
I booked a Terrace Studio for $159.20 before taxes and fees, and the prepaid portion through American Express Travel came to $180.50. That amount was completely covered by my available Amex Platinum hotel credit, leaving me with approximately $119.50 of the semiannual $300 benefit still available.
My FHR reservation then included another $160 in potential dining value through the $100 food and beverage credit and $60 breakfast credit. It also included guaranteed 4 p.m. checkout, noon check-in when available, complimentary Wi-Fi and a room upgrade when available. In my case, I also received the upgrade to a Wraparound Terrace Suite.
I still paid the charges due directly at the hotel and spent beyond some of the included credits. But even if I assign zero dollar value to the suite upgrade and late checkout, the combination of a prepaid room covered by the hotel credit and up to $160 in dining benefits made this an excellent redemption.

My Strategy for Getting the Most From the Amex Platinum Hotel Credit
The biggest takeaway from this stay is not necessarily that everyone should book The Cosmopolitan. The better lesson is to be strategic about where and when you use the benefit.
Look for Fine Hotels + Resorts Properties Under $300
One of my favorite strategies is searching for Fine Hotels + Resorts properties where the prepaid price is close to or below the amount of Amex Platinum hotel credit I still have available. If the hotel rate is low enough, most or all of the prepaid reservation may be covered while you still receive the additional FHR benefits. With this being said, it like like the only place I found this hotel rates low enough are hotels in Vegas and on the weekdays.
Be Flexible With Your Las Vegas Dates
Hotel prices in Las Vegas can change dramatically from one night to the next. If your schedule is flexible, compare several dates before booking. Conventions, concerts, sporting events and busy weekends can push prices up significantly. A quieter weekday can sometimes offer a much better opportunity to maximize the credit.
Don’t Automatically Book the Cheapest Room
The difference between my City Room and Terrace Studio was only about $8, yet the Terrace Studio gave me a much more quintessential Cosmopolitan experience because it included a private balcony. Always scroll through the available room categories before booking. Sometimes a significantly better room costs only a small amount more.
Pay Attention to the Hotel’s FHR Property Benefit
Fine Hotels + Resorts includes a property-specific benefit worth at least $100, but the benefit varies by hotel. Depending on the property, it may be a dining credit, spa credit or another hotel experience. I personally prefer hotels where the credit can be applied toward food and beverage because I know I will use it. If you are comparing two similarly priced FHR hotels, the property benefit can be a useful deciding factor.
Never Count on the Room Upgrade
My upgrade to a Wraparound Terrace Suite was an incredible bonus, but it was still based on availability. I would not recommend booking a more expensive room solely because you are hoping to receive an even better suite upgrade. I only did it in this case because it was $8 more. If it was $50 more, I probably would have passed. Choose a room you would be happy staying in and treat anything better as a bonus.
Check What Is Due at the Hotel
The Amex Platinum hotel credit applies to eligible prepaid reservations made through American Express Travel, but that does not necessarily mean every cost associated with the stay is included. In destinations like Las Vegas, resort fees or other charges may still be collected directly by the hotel. Always review the payment breakdown before booking so you know what is prepaid and what you will owe at the property.
Is The Cosmopolitan the Best Use of the Amex Platinum Hotel Credit?
I think The Cosmopolitan can be one of the best uses of the Amex Platinum hotel credit in Las Vegas when the price is right. That last part is important. I would not book The Cosmopolitan through Fine Hotels + Resorts at any price simply because I had a credit available.
What made this stay so valuable was finding the Terrace Studio for just $159.20 before taxes and fees. At that rate, the hotel credit covered the prepaid portion of my reservation, I received up to $160 in dining benefits, I had a guaranteed 4 p.m. checkout and I had the possibility of receiving a room upgrade. Then I actually received the upgrade to a Wraparound Terrace Suite.
If the same room had been $600 per night, I would have compared other hotels and run the numbers again. The goal is not simply to use your credit. The goal is to get as much useful value from it as possible.

Is Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts Worth It in Las Vegas?
Fine Hotels + Resorts can make a lot of sense in Las Vegas because luxury hotel prices fluctuate so dramatically. When rates drop, the combination of the Amex Platinum hotel credit and FHR benefits can create opportunities that may be difficult to replicate with a standard hotel booking.
That does not mean FHR is always the cheapest option. I still recommend comparing the American Express Travel rate with the hotel’s direct rate and then calculating the value of the benefits you will realistically use. A $100 property credit is not truly worth $100 to you if you would never have spent that money. A room upgrade is not guaranteed. Breakfast for two may be extremely valuable for some travelers and less useful for others.
The best redemption is one where the included benefits line up with expenses you would have incurred anyway. For my one-night stay at The Cosmopolitan, that is exactly what happened.
Final Thoughts: Don’t Just Use Your Amex Platinum Hotel Credit… Maximize It!
The biggest mistake you can make with the Amex Platinum hotel credit is treating it like a coupon you simply need to use before it expires. Instead, look for opportunities where the hotel rate and Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits work together to create substantially more value.
For my Cosmopolitan stay, my $180.50 prepaid hotel charge was covered by the credit. I received up to $160 in food and breakfast benefits, had guaranteed 4 p.m. checkout and was upgraded from a Terrace Studio to a Wraparound Terrace Suite. I also still had roughly $119.50 of my $300 semiannual hotel credit remaining. Would I receive the exact same value every time? Probably not. But that is why I continue checking Fine Hotels + Resorts rates before booking a luxury hotel.
If you are heading to Las Vegas and have an Amex Platinum Card, I would absolutely compare The Cosmopolitan Fine Hotels + Resorts rate with the hotel’s direct rate before making your reservation. You may be surprised by how much value you can get from a single night through the Fine Hotel and Resorts Program.
Amex Platinum Hotel Credit FAQ
How much is the Amex Platinum hotel credit?
Eligible U.S. Consumer Platinum Card Members can currently receive up to $600 per calendar year, divided into up to $300 in statement credits from January through June and another $300 from July through December, on eligible prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts (1-night minimum) or The Hotel Collection (2-night minimum) bookings through American Express Travel. Always review the current American Express terms before booking because card benefits can change.
Can I use the Amex Platinum hotel credit for a one-night stay?
Yes. An eligible Fine Hotels + Resorts booking can be for one night. The Hotel Collection generally requires a minimum stay of two consecutive nights, which is one reason I prefer searching FHR when I only need a short luxury hotel stay.
Is The Cosmopolitan Las Vegas part of Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts?
The Cosmopolitan was available as a Fine Hotels + Resorts property for my reservation. Participating hotels can change, so search your specific dates through American Express Travel to confirm current availability and benefits.
What benefits did I receive at The Cosmopolitan through Amex FHR?
For my stay, my benefits included a $100 food and beverage credit, $60 daily breakfast credit for two, guaranteed 4 p.m. checkout, noon check-in when available and a room upgrade when available. I was upgraded from a Terrace Studio to a Wraparound Terrace Suite. Hotel-specific FHR benefits can change, so always verify the benefits listed for your particular reservation.
Does the Amex Platinum hotel credit cover resort fees?
No. The hotel credit applies to eligible prepaid bookings made through American Express Travel, while certain charges collected directly by the property will still be due separately. You do get a $5 WiFi credit which the hotel will take off at the end. So, my original resort fee was $55+tax, but now will be $50+tax.
Are Amex FHR room upgrades guaranteed?
No. Fine Hotels + Resorts room upgrades are provided when available, and certain room categories may not be eligible. I received a significant upgrade at The Cosmopolitan, but I recommend booking a room you would still be happy with if no upgrade becomes available.
